Advancing Care Consistency
What is clinical standardization on Symbio?
An important part of implementing a clinical transformation initiative like Symbio is standardizing clinical practices, workflows, and documentation as much as possible.
This means reviewing and aligning workflows, care approaches, forms and documentation, orders and order sets, and medication formularies (and many other things) so there is one consistent provincial set of clinical content loaded into the future clinical information system that will be used to facilitate patient care.
Right now, Symbio’s clinical team is working with prescribers, clinicians, and subject-matter experts from all zones across New Brunswick to review existing clinical content and align it provincially.

Why do we need clinical standardization?
To ensure a consistent standard of care across the province.
To create one comprehensive set of clinical content (e.g., documentation and order sets in the clinical information system).
To make patient information easier to find, use, and understand across the entire province—leading to safer, more coordinated care.
Why are we doing this work now?
Standardized clinical content will guide the build of the future clinical information system once the vendor is selected.
By starting now, we can work through key decisions early and reduce delays later in the build of the clinical information system.
Who is involved in this work?
Prescribers (physicians, nurse practitioners), clinicians (nurses, therapeutic services), and support services staff from both Vitalité Health Network and Horizon Health Network, Department of Health and Service New Brunswick are participating in Symbio working groups and focus groups.
They are leading the review of order sets, documentation, and workflows to develop a provincial standard.
